I am one of the guilty ones that doesn’t always have an up to date resume and yes, it stopped me from applying for some jobs because creating a new one was more effort than I wanted to expend.
Over the years how we write and store our resume has changed a lot. Back in the good old days is was type written and photocopied. There was no way to make sure it was accurate on a regular basis. Then when we got computers it was a miracle, I could save it on my hard drive and go back and get it anytime I wanted a copy, but when my hard drive failed (yes it happens to the best of us), I lost it all. Even my backup thumb drive got lost in my moves from one office to another.
Face it, when you’ve been working for the same employer for years and years, you don’t even miss the fact that you haven’t got an up to date resume. Until one day they say – ‘You’re redundant’ or ‘you need to apply for internal jobs now’, there is no automatic progression through the ranks.
Along comes LinkedIn – the professionals Social Media Site.
When I got an invitation to create a LinkedIn Profile, I thought why? Who would care what I’ve done and what I’m doing? I wasn’t looking for a job and I’m not a big sharer, not even on Facebook. Well, a lot of people care actually. I found that when I was talking to someone on the phone and I wanted the scoop on their business activities and history I automatically opened LinkedIn to gain some insight. You can see their professional photo, not a happy snap and you see their work history. This stuff is gold for colleagues or prospective employers to get a feel for you. It’s an HR persons dream.
