I had a discussion last week, that I thought I would bring to the blog to see what you think. I am part of a mentoring group on marketing and websites where one of the louder people advised us, “I’m just not creative. I’m the sales guy.”
I called ‘bull dust’ on that comment…
Everyone is creative in their own right, it’s not always about writing poetry, drawing or painting. In current day life, with a glut of technology, arts and science have formed an alliance and changed the way we express ourselves through innovation and as a sales guy, he needs to use his creativity every time he makes a sale, because each sale is individualised.
This person isn’t just a sales guy, he works in a successful educational business and spends his time finding solutions to his clients problems. How is thinking outside the square and coming up with incredibly creative ways to get people to understand more about what they can do for them not being creative? Just because he doesn’t design his own graphics, or write his own copy doesn’t mean he’s not creative.
His creativity lies in the fact that he has an understanding that everyone has different issues and provides out of the box thinking to solve them like a puzzle.
So what is the official definition of creativity?
The Oxford Dictionary says:
The use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness.
There it is, inventiveness. Not anything to do with artistic ability, plain old creating something using your imagination.
Today I want you to think about your creativity…do you think you are a creative person?
When you think about it, take a look at the areas where you feel most satisfied in your life, what do you do that gives you a successful buzz?
Maybe you fixed something that looked impossible to fix…
Maybe you beat someone in a game you played….using your innovative brain to beat theirs is creativity.
Did you design a spreadsheet to provide better reporting?
Or maybe like the guy, you made an impossible sale using your out of the box thinking.
Creativity is all around us, it’s smart thinking to bring useful solutions.
You might need to be creative to be artistic, but you don’t need to be artistic to be creative. Don’t let the arty farty types change the definition.
You are creative, just because you have an imagination.
Share this with all your creative friends so they can be inspired, just as you inspire me to share.
