Having a personally selected mentor is like an extension of your brain.
They have wisdom, experience and most of all perspective to value add to situations you find yourself in. The reasoning behind who you select as your mentor is unique and personal based on your knowledge, area of expertise, personality and your destination.
Selecting a mentor is a little like selecting a business partner or new employee, except this person will be better, they will also be your guide. You analyse your requirements, strengths and weaknesses to decide on the best person for the job. You need to write a set of criteria they must meet.
What areas do you require extending yourself in?
The problem with selecting a mentor is that you don’t get to ask for a resume and cover letter for the position. Understanding your own needs is where you will discover who the right person to mentor you is. Once you have a clear understanding of what you are looking for, it will be easier to do your research into who will provide the most value.
You are obviously looking to be successful. I don’t know of anyone who wants to be a failure.
So, as I look at it, the 10 qualities that most highly successful people have are
- Drive
- Self-reliance
- Willpower
- Patience
- Integrity
- Communication
- Passion
- Optimism
- Connection
- Self-confidence.
Take some time to analyse yourself. Do you have these qualities? Maybe pick 3 or 4 that you feel needs some work. When you are hunting for the right person to be your mentor you need to use your level as a benchmark and look for someone who excels in that area, someone who’s experience you admire.
No one of these areas is any more important than another because to be on top of your game, you need a little, or maybe a lot of each.
When you add the outcome of your reflection to your area of expertise, the number of people you have to select from is highly reduced. Remember you are looking for ‘the one’.
How else do you narrow it down?
Destination…where do you see yourself? Is anyone you admire there already? Does someone have the confidence level or skills you are looking for?
Why leave it all to chance?
If you have the ability to take your own life and future into your hands, why wouldn’t you take it? Selecting the right person to mentor you is where the fun begins.
In 2014, I made the decision to share what I learned from personal experience with the world and to blog about mentoring.
